An intumescent is a substance that swells as a result of heat exposure, thus increasing in volume and decreasing in density. Intumescents are typically used in passive fire protection.
The intumescent paint is wide used for the steel structure its because of it can applied directly on to the steel structure and meet various design profile by adjusting the thickness and the system. No additional coating required and the finishing surface can be smooth and good for aesthetic too.
If the steel structure is partially closing of steel columns or cladding with others material, where the surface is reduce the exposure of the steel to the heat and thereby the thickness of the coating can be reduce accordingly and meet the fire rating specify.
Basically, the thinner steel members required more thickness of the coating compare with thicker members due to its easily heat up during the fire.
The major advantage of the intumescent paint is the coating can apply the decorative finish which is enhancing the appearance of the structure. Steel members at podium, columns steel structure or transparent lift core steel structure is common use intumescent paint finish achieving the design & structure integrity feature.
